It’s Official – Measure to Legalize Assisted Suicide Will be on Nov. 4 Ballot in Washington State

As we feared, a measure, 1-1000, to legalize assisted suicide in the state of Washington will be on the November 4 ballot after proponents of the measure were successful in gathering sufficient valid signatures.

If this extremely onerous proposal is approved by the voters in Washington, it would legalize the killing of vulnerable patients by allowing their physicians to prescribe lethal doses of drugs so the patients can kill themselves.

Among the strongest opponents of 1-1000 are disability rights organizations who fear the legalization of assisted suicide will erode even further the ability of those with disabilities to receive adequate medical treatment. And they are right!

Leading the charge on behalf of 1-1000 is former Governor Booth Gardner who is wealthy, well-known, and has a progressive disease. Proponents of assisted suicide have raised over $1 million while opponents have raised a fraction of that amount. Fighting back 1-1000 will be a long and lengthy battle.

Our nation must guard against those “choices” which victimize the vulnerable, ourselves and society as a whole. Instead, we must minister compassionately to those who suffer from pain and those who fear death. It is vital that the healing tradition of medicine is maintained where doctors heal, not kill, their patients.

For those who would like to know more about the dangers of legalized euthanasia and assisted suicide, I strongly recommend the Nightingale Alliance website. This site is a joint venture of Wisconsin Right to Life and Christian Life Resources and it has become a worldwide information resource on these topics. You can access it here
