Passage of Wisconsin’s Safe Haven Law is Pro-Life Victory

On Friday, November 5, 2021, a bill authored by State Representative Todd Novak and State Senator Joan Ballweg that adds information about Wisconsin’s Safe Haven Laws into school sexual education curriculum was signed into law by Governor Tony Evers (2021 Wisconsin Act 90).

Safe Haven Laws in Wisconsin allow newborn children less than 72 hours old to be anonymously relinquished to police officers, first responders, and hospital workers without legal consequence. Once a child is relinquished, an adoption can be facilitated. Under Wisconsin Act 90, education about the current laws will be incorporated into health classes in classrooms around the state.

Gracie Skogman, legislative director of Wisconsin Right to Life stated, “Wisconsin’s safe haven laws save lives, and offer critical options to parents in crisis. We have reason to believe that even more infants will be saved thanks to the passage of this law, which will allow an increasing amount of students and their families to become aware of the safe haven laws in Wisconsin.”

Skogman continued, “The passage of this law is a victory for the pro-life movement, and our goal to protect lives and support expectant mothers with more information and options.”
