Apologists Continue Campaign to Convince Catholics Obama is Pro-Life

  • Blog

The battle for the Catholic vote is becoming fiercer by the day, pitting Obama apologists against Catholic bishops and other commentators.

Chief Obama culprit is Pepperdine law professor Doug Kmiec who claims he is a pro-life Catholic. Kmiec blew his cover in an article written for the Los Angeles Times where he admitted that he is “personally opposed — but…..” This is the same tired, old rhetoric that politicians have used for years to deceive the public into thinking they are not pro-abortion.

Kmiec, Nicholas Cafardi and M. Cathleen Kaveny even take a whack at McCain in an article written for Newsweek. They claim McCain couldn’t really be for the reversal of Roe v. Wade because it hasn’t happened in the nearly three decades he has been in Congress.

So, let’s get this straight. McCain isn’t that strongly pro-life because he hasn’t single-handedly overturned Roe. But, Obama is pro-life, even though he promised Planned Parenthood that he’d like his first act as President to be the signing of the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA).

FOCA would overturn all of the federal and state laws passed in the past 35 years that restrict abortion. FOCA would usher in taxpayer funding of abortion, partial-birth abortions, secret abortions for minors with no parental involvement, no required informed consent with waiting periods for women seeking abortions, and no conscience rights for medical professionals.

Yet, Kmiec and company insist that Obama is sincerely opposed to abortion and wants to reduce their numbers.

Patrick Whelan, president of Catholic Democrats, said: “I feel that every Catholic can vote for Obama in good conscience………Obama is the first Democratic presidential candidate who has come out and said he plans constructive measures to reduce the number of abortions in the United States.”

What measures? And, where are they? The only measure Obama has promised to deliver is FOCA which is certain to increase the number of abortions.
