Senate Democrats to Try Passage Again of DISCLOSE Act

  • Blog

Despite failure to break a filibuster on the DISCLOSE Act in July, Reid and company plan to bring up the measure again tomorrow in what appears as a desperate attempt to protect Democratic incumbents. The bill, S. 3628, has provisions which favor groups close to the Democratic party while silencing others like Wisconsin Right to Life.

Douglas Johnson, Legislative Director of National Right to Life, believes Reid will fail again. “It appears that the White House, and Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid, are going to make one more desperate attempt to prevent citizen groups from disseminating messages to the public that might contain unflattering information about the Administration, the congressional Democratic leadership, and the legislation they have been pushing,” says Johnson. ” We believe this attempt will again fail.”

Reid’s strategy, as it was in July, is to find at least one Republican who will help break the filibuster. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has said that Republicans will hold firm and not break ranks.
