Congressional Lawmakers Admit “Bait and Switch” is On for Taxpayer Funding of Cloning

  • Blog

As reported yesterday, National Right to Life (NRLC) warned members of Congress that the NIH guidelines released on Friday are part of an elaborate “bait and switch” strategy. Congressional lawmakers appear to be admitting to this strategy.

Rep. Diana DeGette and Rep. Michael Castle issued a press release responding to the NIH guidelines talking abut their proposed legislation, not yet introduced, which would supposedly merely codify the NIH guidelines — just as NRLC predicted. DeGette said she is “planning to move forward with legislation that will promote all forms of ethical stem cell research.”

Ethical to DeGette is expected to include federal funding for creation of human embryos, including clones and hybrids, for purposes of destruction for research. A spokesperson for DeGette did not refute NRLC’s claim that the new legislation is a “bait and switch.” President Obama is expected to support this strategy.
